waterisessentialforlife.yetmanymillionsofpeoplearoundtheworldfacewatershortages.manymillionsofchildrendieeveryyearfromwater-bornediseases.anddroughtregularlyafflictssomeoftheworld'spoorestcountries.theworldneedstorespondmuchbetter.weneedtoincreasewaterefficiency,especiallyinagriculture.weneedtofreewomenandgirlsfromthedailychoreofhaulingwater,oftenovergreatdistances.wemustinvolvethemindecision-makingonwatermanagement.weneedtomakesanitationapriority.thisiswhereprogressislaggingmost.andwemustshowthatwaterresourcesneednotbeasourceofconflict.instead,theycanbeacatalystforcooperation.significantgainshavebeenmade.butamajoreffortisstillrequired.thatiswhythisyearmarksthebeginningofthe"waterforlife"decade.ourgoalistomeettheinternationallyagreedtargetsforwaterandsanitationby2017,andtobuildthefoundationforfurtherprogressintheyearsbeyond.
