Thepeopleinthedinerseemedaslonelyastheplaceitself.Twomeninrumpledworkshirtssatatthecounter,onstoolsseveralfeetapart,staringwearilyintocupsofcoffeeandsmokingcigarettes.Theirfacessproutedwhatlookedlikedaylongstubblesofheard.Ifiguredtheywereprobablyshiftworkerswho,forsomereason,didn'twanttogohome.Threestoolsdownfromtheworkers,Ispottedathinyoungmanwithamopofblack,curlyhair.HewasdressedinbrownLevicordswithacheckedwesternstyleshirtunbuttonedattheneck.HeworeablankexpressionashepickedataplateoflimpFrenchfries.Iwonderedifhehadjustreturnedfromadisappointingdate.Attheoneoupiedboothwasanfiddle-agedcouple.Theyhadn'tgottenanyfoodyet.Hewasstaringoffintospace,ldlytappinghisspoonagainstthetable,whileshedrewaimlessparallellinesonherpapernapkinwithabentdinerfolk.Neithersaidawordtotheother.

Finally,afired-lookingwaitressapproachedmewithherthickorderpad.Iorderedthecoffee,butIwantedtodrinkitfastandgetoutofthere.Mycar,andthesolitarymilesaheadofme,wouldbelonely.Buttheywouldn'tbeaslonelyasthatdineratmidnight.
